How to Give a Wedding Speech That Everyone Will Remember

As a wedding videographer, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing countless heartfelt speeches — from proud parents to lifelong friends, to siblings with stories that span decades. And while every speech is given with love, the ones that truly shine, the ones that make it into the final film and live on for years, all have one thing in common: they’re about the couple.

A great wedding speech must not be perfect, polished or poetic. But it does need to be personal. So if you’ve been asked to speak at a wedding and want to create something meaningful, here’s how to make your words count.

1. Focus on the Couple’s Journey

The most memorable speeches are those that reflect on the couple's relationship, not just one person’s past. Think about when you first saw them together. What stood out? How do they bring out the best in each other? These shared moments are what make a wedding speech truly special.

Whether you're a parent, sibling, or friend, your unique perspective on their relationship is something no one else can offer.

2. Share a Story With Heart

Stories are the heartbeat of a good speech. Choose one that reflects who the couple are, maybe the moment they met, a funny misunderstanding, or a time they supported each other through something tough. A well-told, genuine story gives everyone in the room a glimpse into the connection they share.

It doesn't have to be dramatic or overly sentimental, just real.

3. Include Both People

Even if you know one person better than the other, make sure your speech celebrates both of them. Talk about the impact their partner has had. How do they complement each other? What have you noticed about them as a couple? A balanced speech shows respect and love for the new partnership being formed.

4. Keep It Simple and Sincere

You don’t need to write a novel. In fact, shorter speeches often land the strongest. Aim for three to five minutes — enough time to tell a story, share a message, and raise a toast. Speak slowly, breathe, and don’t worry about being overly formal. Being sincere is far more powerful than being polished.

5. Close With a Heartfelt Toast

Finish with a few words of well-wishing. You might offer a bit of wisdom, a hope for their future, or simply a toast to love and laughter. It’s the perfect way to wrap everything up on a warm and positive note.

Why It Matters

From a filmmaker’s point of view, the speeches that end up in the final wedding film are the ones that capture something real and emotional about the couple’s story. Those are the moments that get remembered, not just by the newlyweds, but by everyone watching for years to come.

So when you’re writing your wedding speech, think of it as a gift — a snapshot of love, friendship, and connection. Speak from the heart, and you’ll create something truly unforgettable.
